The Jewish Everyday Rights Forum (JERF)

“Article 22 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) establishes the right to social security and the realisation of economic, social and cultural rights” (Article 22, Universal Declaration of Human Rights).

The Jewish Everyday Rights Forum (JERF) is a cross‑communal network of Jewish organisations working together to safeguard everyday rights – including access to housing, healthcare, food, and dignity. Convened by René Cassin, the Forum brings together frontline charities, welfare organisations, community groups and individuals to share challenges, identify systemic issues, and strengthen rights‑based protections for the Jewish community.

Why we set up the forum:

As a Jewish organisation working in the area of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, we saw how underrepresented Jewish voices were and how mainstream misunderstandings of the Jewish community and Jewish culture hindered the ability for Jews to access their socio-economic rights.

JERF is inspired by the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. We believe in the power of shared experiences and strategic engagement to influence policymakers and strengthen alliances. Through JERF, we provide a platform for Jewish organisations to share their insights, learn from each other, and collectively advocate for the legal enshrinement of socio-economic rights.

 What The Forum Offers

The Jewish Everyday Rights Forum is a unique space where organisations across all areas of the diverse British Jewish community can come together to discuss socio-economic issues the community faces and decide on policy solutions. René Cassin provides the advocacy outlet of the Forum.

Key functions of JERF:

(1) A Convening Space: JERF provides a dedicated space for Jewish organisations to come together, discuss shared priorities, and strategise on pressing issues related to housing, health, and food security.

(2) An Advocacy Platform: Through JERF, Jewish perspectives are elevated in national dialogues on socio-economic rights, ensuring that the community’s experiences and needs are represented in policy-making processes.

(3) A Resource Hub: JERF acts as a resource hub, offering members access to training, shared learning opportunities, and strategic engagement to enhance their advocacy efforts.

(4) Training Opportunities: JERF offers training for service providers on how to use the Human Rights Act and other rights‑based tools to advocate for clients facing barriers in housing, healthcare, social care, and welfare.

What people say...

“It is vital to have such perspectives to deepen the understanding of the needs in rights protection so that what is developed is appropriate and inclusive for everyone. I think that the work Réne Cassin is doing in this space is very much needed and… I can see how broadening its work to socio-economic rights more generally will be hugely valuable and welcome.”
