What is modern slavery?
The UN defines modern slavery as “recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons by means of threat, or use of force, coercion or deception…to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation”.[In1]
Slavery can include domestic servitude, sex and labour based trafficking, organ harvesting and forced criminal exploitation.
An estimated 40.3 million are victims of modern slavery today, 70% of victims are women and girls, and $150 billion is made each year from forced labour.
Slavery right now can be found…
- Uyghur forced labour picking the cotton for our clothes
- Fast fashion clothing giant Boohoo saw ‘sweatshop suppliers’
- The Nationality and Borders Bill is likely to make slavery worse

What’s Jewish about this?
Slavery calls to mind images of the Israelites in Egypt or the trans-Atlantic trade. Read more, here.
