On 21 September 2022, over 50 faith, charity and organisational leaders signed an open letter to the Prime Minister, calling for direct support for the poorest households in response to rising living costs. We are proud to be one of these signatories alongside Jewish leaders including Rabbi Robyn Ashworth-Steen, Rabbi Gabriel Kanter-Webber, Rabbi Lea Mühlstein, Rabbi Aaron Goldstein and many others.
Our decision to sign this letter comes as part of our social justice campaigning efforts. Whilst our focus in this area is working to enshrine the Right to Food in UK law, we see the soaring cost of living as inextricably linked to the issue of food poverty in this country.
As faith groups, charities, trade unions and front-line organisations we have seen the cost of living emergency escalating not only in the statistics but in the lives of people we meet day to day, in foodbanks, debt centres and in our places of worship. The least well-off in our communities are facing the sharpest end of this crisis, and without substantial support will be dragged into destitution.
We would like to extend our thanks to the Joint Public Issues Team, Professor Donald Hirsch, Gordon Brown and all our fellow signatories for their hard work and determination. You can read the letter here and read more about our work on the Right to Food here.
