Dear Supporter
Sukkot calls us to dwell in temporary structures, with open roofs and walls that invite us to look outward, to the sky, to our neighbours, and to those seeking shelter. It is a time to welcome guests, share meals, and reflect on the fragility of home.
This year, that fragility feels painfully real. The appalling attack on Jewish worshippers in Manchester was not only an act of antisemitic violence, it was a violation of the fundamental right to safety, shelter, and freedom of belief. No one should fear for their life while practising their faith.
The mitzvah of welcoming the stranger runs deep in Jewish tradition. Abraham and Sarah’s tent, open on all sides, symbolised both the journey and the refuge offered to those in need. We are called not just to admit others, but to embrace them with compassion and dignity.
This message resonates powerfully today. The UK’s asylum system remains hostile, where control is prioritised over care. Essential rights are being stripped away, and the path to citizenship, a symbol of safety and belonging, is being unfairly closed to many.
As we sit in our Sukkot this week, let us remember those whose homes are fragile or lost, those seeking refuge, and those who live under the shadow of hatred. Let us recommit to building a society rooted in compassion, justice, and welcome.
